There's two maps and two game modes to choose from (Team Deathmatch and Warpath), and you have all the weapons you could dream of at your disposal: shotguns, lightning rifles, rocket launchers, and even the gauss cannon. As a plus, one of the power ups you can pick up, other than quad damage and the like, lets you play as the demon from the game's cover art, with shoulder-mounted rockets to boot. The closed beta for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will start on April 22, although if you’re listening this you’re too late – registration has already ended.



EA has been encouraging people to sign up for months now, as a ‘Frontrunner’ and they’ll get an email code for the beta on Friday 22nd. Anyone that’s signed up for the beta via other means will get their code on Saturday 23rd.

The beta will run for five days, until Tuesday April 26, and will feature ‘several’ main story missions, side missions, and other optional content. The Social Play features will also be up and running, allowing you to compare your best times with other players.



The game itself will be released on May 26, for Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, and PC. It’s almost a year since we last played it now, so we’re looking forward to reporting back on it once the beta starts.

Petya ransomware victims can now unlock infected computers without paying.



An unidentified programmer has produced a tool that exploits shortfalls in the way the malware encrypts a file that allows Windows to start up.



In notes put on code-sharing site Github, he said he had produced the key generator to help his father-in-law unlock his Petya-encrypted computer.



The malware, which started circulating in large numbers in March, demands a ransom of 0.9 bitcoins (£265).

Security researcher Lawrence Abrams, from the Bleeping Computer news site, said the key generator could unlock a Petya-encrypted computer in seven seconds.



But the key generator requires victims to extract some information from specific memory locations on the infected drive.



And Mr Abrams said: "Unfortunately, for many victims extracting this data is not an easy task."



This would probably involve removing the drive and then connecting it up to another virus-free computer running Windows, he said.



Another tool can then extract the data, which can be used on the website set up to help people unlock their computer.



Independent security analyst Graham Cluley said there had been other occasions when ransomware makers had "bungled" their encryption system.



Cryptolocker, Linux.encoder and one other ransomware variant were all rendered harmless when their scrambling schemes were reverse-engineered.



"Of course," said Mr Cluley, "the best thing is to have safety secured backups rather than relying upon ransomware criminals goofing up."

From ninth planet to astronomical oddball, scientists’ evolving understanding of Pluto is revealing more and more strange finds about the distant dwarf planet. The latest: an icy "spider" formation stretching across the landscape.



New NASA images have revealed red tendrils radiating from a central point in the form of a spider. Images of the odd formation were captured by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft in July.



Questions abound over the details of the spider formation, but there are few reference points for scientists to pull from.



"Oh, what a tangled web Pluto's geology weaves," said Oliver White, part of the New Horizons geology team, said in a NASA press release. "The pattern these fractures form is like nothing else we've seen in the outer solar system, and shows once again that anywhere we look on Pluto, we see something different."



The New Horizon spacecraft, launched in 2006, was the first mission tasked with visiting Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. Scientists have released a steady string of discoveries about the dwarf planet ever since the spacecraft completed a flyby of Pluto in 2015.



Images have revealed mountains powdered with methane snow, areas where liquid nitrogen once pooled into lakes, and recent evidence of erosion. But little has prepared scientists for the spider-shaped anomaly.



The feature consists of several fractures in the surface – current images show at least six. Length varies between the fractures. The longest, informally called Sleipnir Fossa, is more than 360 miles long, while the shortest runs for roughly 60 miles.



Terrain also does not appear to have an impact on the fractures.



“To the north and west, the fractures extend across the mottled, rolling plains of the high northern latitudes, and to the south, they intercept and cut through the bladed terrain informally named Tartarus Dorsa,” NASA states.



Scientists have encountered fractures on Pluto before. Some run along the crust parallel to each other in strips due to Pluto’s icy crust expanding. The fact the spider fractures radiate from a central point suggests a different cause, possible “material welling up from under the surface,” according to NASA.



The red coloring revealed by the fractures? That’s still an anomaly.



NASA has ranked the exploration of the Kuiper Belt and Pluto as the highest priority for exploring the solar system. The New Horizons mission was originally scheduled to end in 2016, but the spacecraft has already traveled past Pluto and deeper into the largely unexplored Kuiper Belt.



If further funding is found and NASA approves an extended mission, the New Horizons spacecraft would travel farther into space and explore other large space objects orbiting the sun in the Kuiper Belt region in 2017, according to the New Horizons team.

The roar of a volcano erupting on a remote Alaska island reveals important details about the blast, such as its size and location, a new study reports.



Armed with this new information, scientists in Alaska are listening to volcanoes to better pinpoint eruption hazards.



"Sound waves are very good at telling you about how, when and where a volcano is erupting," said lead study author David Fee, a research assistant professor at the Alaska Volcano Observatory and Wilson Alaska Technical Center in Fairbanks.



The findings were published today (April 4) in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.



Erupting volcanoes are often compared to thundering jet engines. The sound is loud enough to shake the ground nearby, similar to how a passing garbage truck may rattle windows in an apartment or a house. Seismometers placed near a volcano can detect this shaking, called ground-coupled airwaves, Fee told Live Science. Ground-coupled airwaves (GCAs) occur when an acoustic wave in the atmosphere impacts the Earth's surface. Meteors and nuclear explosions also trigger GCAs. The signals are fairly small compared with felt earthquakes, Fee said.



The shaking pattern produced by sound waves, which travel through the air, looks different from the shaking of earthquake waves, which travel only through the ground, the study showed.

By looking at the sounds picked up by seismometers, the scientists can gather information that otherwise would not be available, Fee said. For instance, thick clouds may hide a volcano from the prying view of a satellite, but monitoring of sound and earthquakes can help determine whether or not volcanic activity is at the surface or only underground. Volcanoes unleash earthquakes and tremors before an eruption as lava and hot fluids push their way through underground fissures. The actual trembling produced by those sound waves starts only once the eruption begins.



"This study is a good example of using data beyond its initial, intended purpose," Fee said. "Due to the high number, remoteness and difficult logistics of the volcanoes we monitor, we often have less than ideal monitoring networks. In these cases, we use as many processing techniques as possible to help monitor and understand these volcanoes."





Knowing whether an eruption has started is crucial in southwest Alaska, because large ash clouds from volcanoes in the Aleutian Islands can affect international flight paths, as with the flights canceled when Pavlof volcano erupted in late March.



Pavlof volcano is one of the three fiery peaks where Fee and his colleagues tested their new technique. The other Alaskan volcanoes studied are Cleveland and Mount Veniaminof. During eruptions at Pavlof volcano in 2007 and 2013, the researchers were able to locate the source to within about 100 feet (within tens of meters).



The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) already monitors some volcanoes in the state with infrasound — low-frequency sound waves outside of the range of human hearing.  The AVO has now added sound-wave-monitoring to its arsenal of techniques, the researchers reported.



"We definitely plan on extending this type of monitoring," Fee said.



However, Alaska's volcanoes continue to hold surprises, even at closely monitored volcanoes such as Pavlof. The most recent eruption of Pavlof, in March 2016, started with essentially no warning.

Wireless charging, once a must-have feature for a smartphone, has fallen out of style largely due to slow charging times and competing wireless charging standards.



LG Innotek, a division within LG Corp. that develops cutting-edge tech components, has created a wireless charging technology for phones it claims is as fast as charging with a wired cable.



The 15-watt transmission module for wireless chargers can charge up a smartphone from 0% to 50% in 30 minutes. In comparison, it can take hours for many existing smartphones with wireless charging support to do the same.



LG says its new wireless charging tech charges phones three times faster than most wireless chargers on the market today that use a 5-watt transmission module.





The transmission module is also compatible with the Wireless Power Consortium and AirFuel Alliance's standards.



Samsung's new Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge support wireless charging with up to 15 watts, according to CIO. But the company's own "Fast Wireless Charger" only outputs around 6-7 watts.



Apple is rumored to be working on a different wireless charging technology — one that wouldn't require the phone to be placed on a wireless charging pad. The technology would allow devices to wirelessly charge over the air.



With new wireless charging innovations, we might finally be able to ditch wires.

Wireless charging, once a must-have feature for a smartphone, has fallen out of style largely due to slow charging times and competing wireless charging standards.



LG Innotek, a division within LG Corp. that develops cutting-edge tech components, has created a wireless charging technology for phones it claims is as fast as charging with a wired cable.



The 15-watt transmission module for wireless chargers can charge up a smartphone from 0% to 50% in 30 minutes. In comparison, it can take hours for many existing smartphones with wireless charging support to do the same.



LG says its new wireless charging tech charges phones three times faster than most wireless chargers on the market today that use a 5-watt transmission module.





The transmission module is also compatible with the Wireless Power Consortium and AirFuel Alliance's standards.



Samsung's new Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge support wireless charging with up to 15 watts, according to CIO. But the company's own "Fast Wireless Charger" only outputs around 6-7 watts.



Apple is rumored to be working on a different wireless charging technology — one that wouldn't require the phone to be placed on a wireless charging pad. The technology would allow devices to wirelessly charge over the air.



With new wireless charging innovations, we might finally be able to ditch wires.
